A
Year of Art
How do
you plan a year of art in advance? You can create an art planning calendar
online or on a traditional blank calendar or in a notebook.
A simple sheet of paper with the month and ideas works also.
Make it your own. Keep it
simple so that it will be something you will personally use.
Scholastic makes an interesting online planning calendar.
You will find art idea projects and plans along with other subjects.
Click the month you are interested in at

Education World has a good year
long template that can be downloaded for free.

THEMES
Before
you can plan a year in advance you will need to gather and organize ideas that
you want to present throughout the year.
Art ideas and themes can come from a variety of sources.
Take a look at your local school calendar and subject requirements for
specific grades. Are you a 4th grade teacher who is suppose to
include a unit on your state’s history this year?
Your state standards should be an integral part of the year plan.
You may be able find out from your district’s website.
Themes can also be determined by age level and interests.
Holidays, current events, artist birthdays, artist of the month and other
themes can also simplify the planning process.
Bulletin boards and the general classroom environment can enhance monthly
themes.
You will
have an easy time addressing art and art history standards and have fun doing it
by selecting an artist of the month theme.

if you or your students share a birthday month with your favorite artist.

A very
comprehensive list of events for each month of the year is at Greetings 123 free
ecard website. Set your browser for
no-pop ups if you are distracted by pop ups, this has many, but it is free and a
good source of holidays-minor and major.

Traveling to New York this Summer? Can't make the trip? Travel Virtually!
Traveling to the Museums this Summer? Be sure to talk to the educational curators of the Art Museums you visit this Summer. Often there are teacher packs and classes offered especially to K-12 educators. Most Art Museums have online lesson plans these days and they can be great resources to add to your curriculum when school starts again. One of my favorites of course is the Getty Museum Center in Los Angeles. If you can't visit in person, take advantage of the online sources at Getty Museum Center http://www.getty.edu/education/search/
